The University of Minnesota Extension, in collaboration with local partners, will host a free Forest Management for Wildlife Field Tour on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 1 to 4 p.m. Central Time. The event will take place at Bass Brook Wildlife Management Area, located at 34385 US-2, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
The tour is designed for landowners, forest enthusiasts, and anyone interested in creating and maintaining habitats for wildlife such as songbirds, deer, and fishers. Participants will explore strategies to make their woodlands more welcoming to diverse species while learning about forest management techniques that encourage ecological balance and sustainability.
During the event, attendees will gain insights into the key components of wildlife habitat in Minnesota forests, guided by Extension educators and forestry experts. The session will also introduce the new Forestry for Minnesota Birds guidebook, which offers creative approaches to promote biodiversity through practical woodland management.
“We will explore the Bass Brook Wildlife Management Area in Grand Rapids; please park and meet us at the Pokegama Dam Campground,” the organizers shared. The field tour will include standing and walking along wide trails, with one section featuring a steeper slope. Participants are advised to dress appropriately for potential cold weather or snow and to be prepared for moderate physical activity.
The event is free, and registration is required to receive additional details and updates. The University of Minnesota Extension ensures equal opportunity for participation in all programs. Those needing accommodation for disabilities are encouraged to contact Anna Stockstad at stock523@umn.edu or call 218-726-6466 at least two weeks before the event.
This educational field tour aims to foster awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of forest management practices that sustain Minnesota’s rich biodiversity.
