The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced the opening of applications for its 2025 Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Meat Education and Training (MEAT) Grant Program. This initiative is designed to support Minnesota schools that wish to either start or enhance meat cutting and butchery training programs for secondary students, covering grades 6 through 12.
A total of approximately $225,000 has been allocated for these grants, and the application process is competitive. Schools can apply for funding ranging from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $75,000 per project. Importantly, up to 10% of each grant may be utilized specifically for faculty training, ensuring educators are well-prepared to deliver these programs. Notably, the MDA does not require schools to provide matching funds, making these grants more accessible.
The purpose of these grants is to equip students with practical and valuable skills in meat processing, a field that is integral to the agricultural sector in Minnesota and beyond. By integrating these programs into school curriculums, the MDA aims to foster a new generation of skilled professionals who can contribute to the state's robust agriculture industry.
Applications must be submitted online through the MDA’s dedicated system by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. The department plans to make decisions on the grant awards by early May, allowing schools to prepare and possibly implement their programs for the following school year.
This grant program represents an important step in enhancing agricultural education and training in Minnesota, supporting not just individual student growth but also addressing the broader needs of the agriculture sector by preparing skilled workers for the future.
