MDA works to aid poultry producers

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has issued a statement regarding the situation involving Pure Prairie Poultry, Inc. The company recently announced the closure of its processing plant in Iowa, which has resulted in many Minnesota chickens being unable to enter the food supply as planned. This situation has raised concerns for the welfare of the chickens and the food supply chain.

“It is unfortunate that many of the Minnesota chickens owned by Pure Prairie Poultry, Inc. were not able to enter the food supply as intended,” the MDA stated. In response to this challenge, the MDA, along with state and federal partners, has been working diligently to ensure the chickens receive proper care and feeding while seeking alternative processing solutions.

The collaboration between the MDA, local farmers, and partners has allowed for some of the chickens to be processed successfully, and efforts to address the remaining birds continue.

While the MDA has assured the public that the chickens do not pose a health or safety risk, they have announced plans to utilize emergency resources to ensure the humane depopulation of the remaining chickens.

This process will be conducted in accordance with the standards set by the American Veterinary Medical Association and will be overseen by experts from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. The MDA emphasizes the importance of adhering to humane treatment practices during this difficult time for the poultry industry.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by poultry producers and the MDA's commitment to working with partners to ensure animal welfare and food safety standards are upheld.

The department continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary, working towards a resolution that supports both the farmers and the affected chickens.
