At the conclusion of its 105th Annual Meeting, the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) Board of Directors outlined their priority issues for the 2024 state legislative session. These priorities stem from grassroots policy established by MFBF members, reflecting the current challenges and opportunities within Minnesota's agricultural and rural communities.
MFBF President Dan Glessing highlighted the role of grassroots membership in identifying these key issues. He emphasized the strength and dedication of the members in shaping policies that address the needs of those engaged in farming and ranching.
The priority issues for the upcoming legislative session include:
Beginning and Emerging Farmers: Focusing on support for individuals, regardless of age or expertise, who are new to or transitioning within the agricultural sector.
Sustainability: Promoting environmentally friendly, climate-smart practices in agriculture, while ensuring financial stability for farmers.
Rural Vitality: Strengthening rural communities through enhanced access to diverse resources.
Research and Investment: Encouraging the future growth of agriculture through practical research, education, and innovation.
Energy and Resource Preservation: Advocating for the development of renewable fuel and alternative energy sources, ensuring these do not encroach on prime farmland.
President Glessing acknowledged the brief duration of the upcoming legislative session but remained confident in the MFBF's ability to effectively advocate for these issues. He expressed readiness to collaborate with legislators from both parties to ensure the voice of agriculture is prominently heard and considered in policy decisions.
These priorities set by the MFBF demonstrate a commitment to evolving agricultural practices, environmental stewardship, and the overall enhancement of rural life in Minnesota.
