MFBF young farmers advance in discussion meet

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation's Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee has completed preliminary rounds of its Discussion Meet competition, which saw 20 competitors compete at the Leadership, Education, Advocacy, and Promotion Conference. Eight semifinalists are now set to compete in the final two rounds at the MFBF Annual Meeting in November.

The advancing semifinalists include Savannah Aanerud from Stevens County, Jeff Debele from Wright County, Jesse Haarman from Olmsted County, Dan Hayes from Nicollet County, Megan Horsager from Chippewa County, Tyler Nelson from Pine County, Tim Pagel from Olmsted County, and Katie Saterbak from Swift County.

These contestants demonstrated exceptional understanding of critical farm issues and collaborative problem-solving abilities, distinguishing themselves among their peers.

The Discussion Meet is designed to replicate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant. This format emphasizes the importance of being knowledgeable about agricultural issues and the ability to communicate effectively.

The ultimate victor of the MFBF Annual Meeting's final competition will earn the opportunity to represent Minnesota at the national YF&R Discussion Meet contest. This prestigious event is scheduled to take place at the American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention, set for January 24-29, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas.

The national contest offers an invaluable platform for young agricultural leaders to showcase their talents on a larger stage, further contributing to the future of farming and ranching across the country.
