The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has unveiled a substantial increase in its funding for the Urban Agriculture Grant program, setting aside $1.87 million for the current round. This is a significant rise from the previous year's $551,000, aiming to promote agricultural education among urban youth and support urban agricultural community initiatives.
Eligible entities include businesses, nonprofits, schools, local governments, and tribal communities in cities with over 5,000 residents or within tribal lands, focusing on projects that bolster connections to agriculture within Minnesota's urban settings.
MDA Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey expressed enthusiasm about expanding the program to enhance urban agricultural connections and foster a sustainable future for Minnesota's agricultural sector.
The grants are designed to cover various project costs, such as personnel, supplies, and equipment, with a maximum request of $100,000 per project, without requiring a cash match.
This year's funding prioritizes projects with environmental benefits, economic justice, and support for underserved communities. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their proposals before the March 21, 2024 deadline, with further details and application materials available on the MDA's grant webpage.
The Urban Agriculture Grant is part of the broader Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Program, which aims to support Minnesota's agricultural and renewable energy initiatives, reinforcing the state's commitment to advancing its agricultural sector through strategic funding and support.
