The Minnesota Farm Bureau is now accepting applications for its prestigious Sesquicentennial Farm program, aimed at recognizing Minnesota families who have owned their farms for 150 years or more. The program underscores the dedication and contributions of families to Minnesota's agricultural legacy, with a deadline for applications set for March 4, 2024.
To be eligible, farms must meet several criteria: they must be at least 150 years old as of 2024, based on verifiable land records; must have been owned continuously by the family, which includes a broad definition extending to direct in-laws and first cousins; must span at least 50 acres and be actively engaged in agricultural production.
Selected families will receive a commemorative certificate signed by notable state leaders and an outdoor sign, marking their farm's long history and ongoing contributions to agriculture. The announcement of recipients is eagerly anticipated in April.
For those interested in applying, further details and application forms can be found on the Minnesota Farm Bureau's website at www.fbmn.org. Pam Debele at the Bureau is available for inquiries via email at pam.debele@fbmn.org or by phone at 651-768-2111.
Along with the Sesquicentennial Farm program, applications for the Century Farm program are also open, celebrating farms with a century-long family ownership. Details for this program are available through similar channels, with the same application deadline.
This initiative continues to highlight the enduring legacy and significance of family farms in shaping Minnesota's agricultural and rural landscapes.
