Million-dollar boost for local foods in Minnesota schools

Million-dollar boost for local foods in Minnesota schools

By Scout Nelson

Governor Tim Walz, along with Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, revealed a new grant initiative totaling nearly $1 million to facilitate access to locally grown foods in schools. This funding, managed by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), is part of the Farm to School and Early Care Grants program.

Governor Walz emphasized the success of Minnesota's free school meals program, which has significantly increased student participation in school-provided breakfast and lunch.

"Now, we're enhancing the nutritional value of these meals by incorporating locally sourced, Minnesota-grown foods," Governor Walz stated, describing the grants as a dual benefit to students and local farmers.

This year's grant recipients include 48 school districts and 14 early childhood education (ECE) centers. For the first time, ECE centers had the opportunity to apply, broadening the program's impact.

MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen highlighted the importance of these grants in connecting children with the state's agricultural roots and supporting local farmers.

The grants are categorized into two types: the First Bite Grant for institutions new to local food purchasing and the Full Tray Grant for those with some experience in farm-to-school activities and ready to expand their efforts.

Grant amounts vary from $2,500 to $30,000, contributing to a total of $724,000 designated for local food purchases. Additional funds of $214,555 were allocated for purchasing necessary equipment to support these initiatives.

This funding is part of the broader Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) program, which aims to advance the agricultural and renewable energy sectors throughout Minnesota.

This initiative improves school nutrition and opens new markets for local food producers, strengthening the state's agricultural economy.
