Minnesota has become the 23rd state to legalize recreational marijuana, introducing several significant changes. Minnesotans now have the right to grow up to eight cannabis plants in their homes, and stores will offer weed seeds under the state's strict seed law regulations.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will oversee the seed program, ensuring truth in labeling and consumer protection. Seed labelers must comply with specific requirements, including testing for contaminants and germination rates.
While marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance at the federal level, cannabis seeds with less than 0.3% THC are considered hemp and are legal under federal law since 2018. The Office of Cannabis Management will regulate the adult-use market, but this may take at least a year to be fully operational. The legalization aims to redirect funds to communities affected by the war on drugs.
Starting August 1, Minnesotans can possess up to two pounds of cannabis flower at home and two ounces while in public. This landmark decision signifies a significant step forward for marijuana enthusiasts and businesses in the state.
