Minnesota has unveiled its first agricultural license plate, a significant step in celebrating and supporting the state's agricultural economy and youth leadership programs.
"We’re excited to have this new license plate that highlights the diversity of Minnesota’s ag economy,” Commissioner Thom Petersen said. “This is an opportunity for Minnesotans to show their commitment to agriculture while supporting our young leaders in FFA and 4-H.”
The plate's design is a collaborative effort, inspired by nearly 100 sketches from 4-H'ers and FFA members. It features symbolic elements like hands holding seedlings and a rising sun, representing the commitment to service and a new era in agriculture. This meaningful design resonates with the core values of both organizations.
The creation of this specialized plate was made possible by legislation passed in 2021. Available for purchase later in February, the plate is priced at $15.50, with a required minimum annual contribution of $20, which directly benefits the youth programs.
Jennifer Skuza, associate dean for Youth Development at the University of Minnesota Extension and Minnesota 4-H State Director, emphasized the importance of agriculture in the 4-H program, aiming to enhance young people's engagement and innovation in this sector.
Val Aarsvold, executive director of the Minnesota FFA Foundation, highlighted the Foundation's commitment to providing comprehensive agricultural education and leadership opportunities to students, irrespective of their economic background.
To obtain this unique license plate, Minnesotans can either visit DMV offices or apply via mail. An online purchase option is available through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's website. Required details for the online process include the vehicle's VIN number, current plate number, and payment information.
Minnesota's first agricultural license plate is not just a vehicle accessory; it represents the state's agricultural heritage and future leaders, investing in the growth and development of young agricultural enthusiasts across the state.
