R.D. Offutt's Twin Rivers Seed Farm, situated near Staples, Minnesota, has recently obtained certification under the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program. This recognition solidifies the farm's position among more than 13,000 growers in the state who prioritize sustainable water and land management practices.
To achieve certification, Twin Rivers Seed Farm underwent a comprehensive evaluation of field characteristics, crop rotation history, nutrient and pesticide management techniques, as well as tillage and irrigation practices. The assessment was conducted by Jim Lahn, an area certification specialist, in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
The certification program has now certified nearly 975,000 acres across Minnesota, signifying the widespread commitment to responsible agricultural practices.
Jake Jacobson, the farm manager at R.D. Offutt, highlighted several conservation processes implemented by the farm to safeguard water quality:
1. Long crop rotation: Potato seed is cultivated only once every four years in each field. Collaborative efforts with neighboring farmers promote crop rotation, which enhances soil health and disrupts pest cycles associated with specific crops.
2. Cover crops: Following potato seed production, the farm plants cover crops such as rye, oats, mustard, and radish on all fields. This practice combats erosion, improves soil health, increases water availability, and supports biodiversity.
3. Minimum tillage: Over the past three years, the farm has significantly reduced tillage practices, limiting them to a single occurrence. Cover crops are incorporated into the soil before planting potato seed each spring.
4. Irrigation management: The farm employs moisture sensors and remote monitoring systems to regulate irrigation. Fields are irrigated only when necessary, utilizing precise center-pivot systems with low-pressure nozzles.
R.D. Offutt Farms operates multiple company and partner farms throughout Minnesota, with a focus on maintaining control over seed quality and ensuring traceability. Their potato seed production involves a multi-year process, including rigorous inspections by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to certify seeds for commercial planting.
Through the achievements of Twin Rivers Seed Farm and its dedication to sustainable practices, the agricultural community in Minnesota gains another exemplar of responsible land and water stewardship.
