New Bird Flu Research Gets Funded

New Bird Flu Research Gets Funded

By Scout Nelson

A team of researchers from a U.S. veterinary college has received $1.5 million in federal funding to explore the spread and effects of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle. The grant, provided through a cooperative agreement with the Department of Agriculture, will support nine different projects focused on understanding how the virus spreads and how to reduce its impact on agriculture.

Since early 2022, a new strain of the bird flu virus has been detected in commercial and backyard poultry. It has also spread to wild birds, mammals, and even humans, with 68 confirmed human cases and one reported death. In 2024, the virus was confirmed in dairy cattle, raising new concerns for both livestock and farm workers.

Although the virus has been more deadly to poultry, its growing presence in cows highlights the need for immediate research. The goal is to better understand interspecies transmission and to develop strategies that can protect the dairy industry and public health.

“Minnesota is unique in having multiple really strong livestock and poultry industries, including turkey, swine, and dairy — and HPAI affects all of them,” said Leading the research is Professor Scott Wells. “The University of Minnesota is well-positioned to help address this challenge, with cutting-edge diagnostic capacities and experts working across industries to look at influenza from many different angles.”

The research coincides with the launch of a national milk surveillance program, which focuses on identifying infected herds to help local authorities respond effectively. In one state, testing will take place at a leading veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

The findings from these projects will help shape future disease prevention efforts, offering valuable guidance to farmers, veterinarians, and policymakers working to maintain a safe and secure food supply.
