New Funding for Minnesota Farmer’s Markets

New Funding for Minnesota Farmer’s Markets

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced a new grant opportunity specifically designed for farmers’ market associations within the state. This initiative, titled the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Assistance Grant, aims to bolster the involvement of markets in various food assistance programs, thereby supporting communities facing food insecurity.

With a total of $150,000 allocated for these grants, the MDA is set to enhance how farmers’ markets facilitate access to fresh, local produce for those in need. Programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), Market Bucks, and Power of Produce (POP) Club are included in this initiative.

Eligible farmers’ market associations can apply for grants ranging from $1,500 to $10,000. The application process is competitive, and there is no requirement for matching funds, making it highly accessible for associations of all sizes. Additionally, approved projects may receive an advance of up to 50% of the granted amount, which must be specified during the application stage.

To qualify, a farmers’ market association must be located in Minnesota and plan to participate in at least one of the designated nutrition assistance programs during 2025. These programs are essential as they allow individuals and families experiencing food insecurity to buy directly from farmers, ensuring access to nutritious food options.

The deadline for applications is February 20, 2025, urging all eligible associations to prepare and submit their proposals promptly. This grant not only aims to address immediate food access issues but also supports the sustainability of local farmers and markets, reinforcing the agricultural foundation of Minnesota’s economy.

Through this funding, the MDA continues its commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of its residents while supporting the state’s agricultural community. This initiative represents a critical step towards creating more inclusive and accessible food systems across Minnesota.
