A special Nitrogen Smart session is scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time at Aune Hall, 1508 Aune Dr. SE, Rochester, MN 55904. This event will explore effective nitrogen management strategies tailored to southeastern Minnesota’s karst landscape to enhance farm productivity while protecting water quality.
Led by Brad Carlson, a water quality educator with the University of Minnesota Extension, the session will cover:
- Nitrogen challenges in southeastern Minnesota
- How nitrogen interacts with the environment
- Groundwater age and nitrate level trends
- Best nitrogen application methods for the region
- The 4Rs of nutrient stewardship
- Research on nitrogen rate and timing
- Manure management strategies
- Farmer panel discussion
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the session starting at 8:30 a.m. A complimentary lunch will be provided. Thanks to support from Minnesota corn farmers and checkoff funds, the event is free.
Pre-registration is encouraged to help with meal planning. The University of Minnesota Extension ensures inclusivity and welcomes requests for disability accommodations at least two weeks before the event. Interpreter services may be available upon prior request.
