Soil Experts Share Effective Practices

By Scout Nelson

The 2026 Soil Management Summit will take place January 14–15 at the Delta Hotel in Fargo, North Dakota. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. Central time and is designed to help attendees understand soil health through real-world experience and scientific research. The summit, along with the DIRT workshop, focuses on proven field practices and applied science that support long-term soil improvement.

Hosted by the University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University, the summit highlights how heavier and colder soils can still perform well when managed with the right techniques. Attendees will hear from experienced no-till, reduced tillage, and cover crop practitioners as they share valuable lessons learned from years of hands-on work. These insights help participants avoid common challenges and adopt practices that improve soil structure and resilience.

The event includes presentations, Q&A sessions with researchers and advisors, and opportunities to connect with agricultural professionals who specialize in soil systems. Sponsors will also provide information on tools and technologies that support soil health. The summit offers CCA continuing education units for those who complete the full conference.

Registration options vary, with early bird pricing at $150 and regular pricing at $190 after December 22 or at the door. A virtual option is also available for $150, while student pricing is $60 or $76 after December 22. Attendees may also register for the preconference dinner with speakers for an additional $40.

The University of Minnesota Extension remains committed to accessible programming. Accommodation for disability-related needs can be requested at least two weeks before the event. Interpreter services may also be available with advance notice. Registration for the summit is handled through the NDSU conference website.

This summit provides an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in practical soil management solutions, applied research, and improved farming systems.
