Stevens County 4-H recently partnered with Morris Area Schools Community Education and Conexiones to host a special archery event for Latino families. The goal was to introduce families to archery in a safe and welcoming environment.
The event featured three interpreters, six shooting sports and wildlife coaches, and enthusiastic support from Conexiones members. Although the event was designed for youth participants, it quickly turned into a meaningful family experience.
"As my coaches were sharing the safety protocols within their groups, it was impactful to see so many father-son pairs. I soon realized that more of the women wanted to be involved too, and with encouragement, they stepped onto the archery line to practice. I observed laughter, smiles and two languages being used to communicate."
One touching moment stood out as a son helped translate and guide his father through the archery process, celebrating each successful shot. The gym was full of "learning by doing" moments where youth encouraged their parents to try something new.
This experience reinforced the importance of family involvement in youth programs. "One reason I always encourage folks to join 4-H is because it involves the entire family. Not only can adults be positive figures for our youth, but our youth can positively influence adults," it was shared.
The UMN REACH Lab highlights that family involvement can help improve children’s relationships, academic performance, reduce risky teen behaviors, and create stronger programs. It also helps parents strengthen their parenting skills.
Reflecting on this event, organizers recognized the importance of creating spaces where families can thrive together. Future includes launching more activities like a 4-H floriculture adventure that families can enjoy as a team.
