Strengthening farm bill and trade opportunities

Strengthening farm bill and trade opportunities

By Scout Nelson

The November 5 election has reshaped Washington’s leadership, bringing new opportunities for agricultural policy. A new administration and Congress will introduce changes impacting farmers and growers across the nation.

Key goals for the remainder of 2024 include passing disaster relief and economic assistance, ensuring financial support for farmers facing economic challenges and natural disasters. Another priority is legislation allowing year-round access to E15, a 15% ethanol blend fuel, benefiting consumers, the environment, and corn ethanol demand. Advocates also aim to push for a stronger farm bill that addresses corn grower priorities.

Looking ahead to 2025, several legislative priorities stand out. The Next Generation Fuels Act remains a top focus. This act modernizes the fuel system, promoting low-carbon, high-octane ethanol blends. It aims to reduce emissions, improve vehicle efficiency, and create demand for corn. Advocates seek bipartisan support to advance this critical legislation.

Expanding international trade is another priority. With 15% of U.S. corn exported, reducing trade barriers and opening new markets is essential. The National Corn Growers Association plans to collaborate with the new administration to negotiate trade agreements and push for increased funding to expand foreign markets.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) tax credits introduced in 2022 are also a focus. These credits support biofuel producers but come with complex requirements.

Advocates hope to work with the administration to make these standards more achievable for corn growers while maintaining environmental goals.

These policy initiatives aim to address key challenges, improve farm economics, and create opportunities for the agricultural sector in the coming years.
