Gardeners are lifelong learners, treating landscapes as laboratories to explore nature’s wonders. Questions like improving soil, identifying pests, or selecting plants for pollinators keep curiosity alive.
To address these, the ProHort online horticulture foundation course, offered by the University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, provides accessible gardening knowledge.
ProHort includes the same material taught to Extension Master Gardener interns but eliminates the volunteer requirement. This program is perfect for educators, industry professionals, and gardeners, whether beginners or experienced, seeking to expand their knowledge of plants, soils, and sustainable gardening practices.
Participants gain valuable insights to enhance their gardening. For example, the program sparked a passion in one gardener to create a pollinator-friendly sanctuary and deepen her understanding of soil science.
The course includes a blend of learning formats, including videos, texts, and articles, making it suitable for all types of learners.
Weekly Q&A sessions with Extension educators and faculty provide opportunities to connect with experts and clarify doubts. Field trips to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and mentor-guided learning further enrich the experience.
New this year, students also receive a printed and digital copy of The Horticulture Core Course Companion Guide, offering an additional resource for their gardening journey.
The ProHort program is an excellent way to jump-start or refine gardening skills while connecting with a community of experts and fellow learners. Registration for the program is open until January 12.
Take this opportunity to build your horticultural knowledge and create thriving gardens while contributing to pollinator conservation and environmental health.
