The State Capitol turned into a hub of energy on February 18 as students, faculty, staff, and alumni from the University of Minnesota gathered to advocate for the institution’s funding needs during University of Minnesota Day at the Capitol.
“Halfway through my first year as president I can say with the utmost confidence that the University of Minnesota is strong and growing stronger,” said University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham. ”Our faculty and staff, who deliver our three-part mission of education, research and outreach, bring tremendous value to communities across our state. And each one of our amazing students –the future leaders who will transform Minnesota for generations to come in the farm fields and city halls and communities and cities of our state – delivers the power and promise of a University of Minnesota degree.”
Students from all five campuses engaged in discussions with legislators, attended rallies, and shared personal experiences about how the university has shaped their lives. Among them was Joud Haj Sakor, a junior at the Rochester campus, who spoke about her hands-on learning in the medical field. She expressed gratitude for opportunities to conduct research and gain real-world experience, preparing her for a future in patient care.
The event featured a morning breakfast with legislators, a showcase highlighting the university’s achievements, and one-on-one meetings with state officials. Throughout the day, the key message remained clear—investing in the university is an investment in Minnesota’s future.
“As Minnesota's only land-grant research institution, our success is directly linked to the success of the state,” said Board of Regents Co-Vice Chair Doug Huebsch. “To deliver on our mission, our students, faculty and staff must be the focus of ongoing, strategic investments.”
The university’s biennial budget request of $235 million aims to:
- Expand health science programs and improve statewide healthcare ($45 million).
- Advance research and innovation by partnering with industry and attracting federal and private funding ($40 million).
- Support over 70,000 students to ensure career readiness ($30 million).
- Optimize resources and invest in the university’s workforce across the state ($120 million).
Additionally, the university’s $220 million capital investment request includes funding for facility repairs and the development of an advanced agricultural research center. These investments aim to enhance education, research, and economic growth across Minnesota.
