Uniform Law Commission Welcomes New Appointees

On May 31, 2025, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Chief Justice Natalie Hudson announced three key appointments to the Commission on Uniform State Laws. These appointments include two reappointments and one new selection. The terms have begun on June 1, 2025, and will run until May 31, 2027.

Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman was reappointed to the commission. She has served in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2005 and is a former House Speaker. Hortman has led on major issues including energy, civil law, transportation, and the environment.

She played a key role in developing Minnesota’s solar energy standards. Her academic background includes degrees from Boston University, Harvard University, and the University of Minnesota Law School.

Kimberly Lowe was also reappointed. She is a founder of Avisen Legal, a law firm that supports both nonprofit and for-profit organizations nationally and internationally. Her work covers sectors like agriculture, technology, and energy. Lowe has held leadership positions in multiple bar associations and has been a Uniform Law Commissioner since 2016.

Newly appointed to the commission is Judge Peter Reyes, Jr., currently serving on the Minnesota Court of Appeals. His experience includes legal roles at Cargill and Barnes & Thornburg. He is active on several legal committees and has contributed to various community and legal organizations.

The Commission on Uniform State Laws plays a critical role in developing uniform legal policies across the state. It includes the Revisor of Statutes and three members appointed by the Governor, Chief Justice, and Attorney General. Members represent Minnesota in national-level discussions to ensure consistent and fair legal standards across the country.

These appointments reflect Minnesota’s commitment to strong leadership and active participation in shaping fair and effective laws across the United States.
