USDA Offers $10 Billion in Crop Relief

USDA Offers $10 Billion in Crop Relief

By Scout Nelson

The USDA has announced the launch of the Emergency Commodity Assistance Program (ECAP) to provide $10 billion in financial relief to eligible crop producers for the 2024 crop year. This program, approved in December, aims to mitigate economic losses farmers faced due to market disruptions and adverse conditions.

Sign-ups for ECAP begin today and will remain open until August 15. Farmers can apply in person at their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office, submit an online application, or return a pre-filled mail application. Payments will be determined based on planted and prevented crop acres for the 2024 season. Corn has been included as an eligible commodity, with a payment rate of $42.91 per acre.

To ensure funds are distributed fairly, initial payments will be prorated at 85% of the total eligible amount. Once the sign-up period concludes, the USDA may issue additional payments if any funds remain available.

“The aid will be critical to ensuring that Minnesota’s family corn farmers have the resources to operate during the 2025 crop year, and we appreciate USDA’s efforts to ensure it reaches growers in a timely fashion,” a representative said.

This program was made possible through advocacy efforts from agricultural organizations and producer groups. Additionally, Congress has approved $20 billion in disaster relief for the 2023 and 2024 crop years. Details on those funds will be provided later by USDA officials.

Producers are encouraged to apply early and stay informed about additional financial assistance programs that may become available.
