Water Crisis Grips Minnesota, Residents Urged to Take Action

Minnesota is grappling with a worsening water crisis as drought conditions intensify. The St. Croix Watershed has escalated from Drought Watch to Drought Warning Response Phase, necessitating water restrictions for public suppliers in the affected area. As more than 80% of the state experiences abnormally dry and/or moderate to extreme drought conditions, the situation calls for immediate action.

The Minnesota Statewide Drought Management Plan is now in effect, with the DNR convening the State Drought Task Force and taking essential measures to address the escalating drought. Suspensions of surface water appropriation permits will begin, targeting water use types like irrigation, dust control, and construction-related activities in watersheds with critically low stream flows.

The recent U.S. Drought Monitor report reveals small areas in southeastern Minnesota and the Twin Cities Metro moving into the extreme drought category for the first time this year. Severe drought conditions are expanding, impacting river flow, agriculture, and even leading to early corn harvest and wildfire risks.

With drought conditions putting a strain on water resources, the DNR urges municipalities and individuals to implement water conservation measures proactively. Even during droughts, it is crucial for all residents to adopt a water conservation mindset and reduce water consumption to secure a sustainable future.

Minnesotans are encouraged to check their water usage, find ways to reduce consumption, and commit to long-term conservation efforts. The DNR's Drought Webpage provides valuable information, including a map of Minnesota watersheds and links to sign up for drought-related notifications. By working together and taking decisive action, we can combat the water crisis and ensure a water-wise future for Minnesota.
