MPCA Grants for Upgrading Old, Non-Road Diesel Equipment
Minnesota Ag Connection - 09/12/2018

Tuesday the MPCA released a request for proposal (RFP) for upgrades to older, non-road diesel equipment. The RFP combines funding from the Volkswagen settlement with funding from EPA's Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant to make available $1.1 million to replace or upgrade non-road diesel equipment such as forklifts, cranes, excavators, towboats, and locomotive engines.

This is the fourth in a series of grant opportunities using funds provided by the national Volkswagen settlement.

Recent MPCA clean diesel projects include replacing engines on a towboat used for dredging, replacing a scrapyard excavator with an all-electric machine, and installing idle reduction devices on two short-line locomotives. Together, these projects cut pollution equivalent to taking nearly 50,000 cars off the road.

Application deadline is Oct. 23. To learn more about this grant opportunity and download the application forms, visit All questions should be emailed to using "DERA Non-Road Grant 2018-19" in the subject line. Answers to questions will be posted in the Questions and Answers tab on the web page.

As with previous VW grants, MPCA will offer training to help grant applicants complete the forms. Training is scheduled for Sept. 20 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the MPCA Saint Paul office. It will also be available online.

Additional grants for diesel trucks and electric vehicle replacement projects using VW settlement funds will be forthcoming over the next year. To learn more about Minnesota's plan for VW settlement funds, visit our web site.
