The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service released the Crop Production 2023 Summary, presenting a mixed bag for Minnesota's agriculture. The report highlights changes in crop yields and harvested areas in Minnesota and the United States.
Corn production in Minnesota showed an upward trend in 2023, reaching 1.51 billion bushels, a 4% increase from the previous year. The corn yield was estimated at 185.0 bushels per acre, with a harvested area of 8.18 million acres. However, corn for silage saw a decrease, dropping by 33% from 2022, with a yield of 18.5 tons per acre.
Soybean production in Minnesota declined by 5% to 349 million bushels, with a yield of 48.0 bushels per acre. The harvested acreage also saw a decrease. All hay production faced a significant drop of 28%, with a yield of 2.11 tons per acre. Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures decreased by 15%, although harvested acres slightly increased.
Other hay production experienced a 50% decline, with a yield reduction of 0.70 ton per acre. Sugarbeet production, however, saw a 13% increase to 12.6 million tons. Oil sunflower production decreased by 28%, while non-oil sunflower production rose by 23%.
Nationally, corn for grain production hit a record high of 15.3 billion bushels, a 12% increase from 2022. The average yield across the U.S. was also at a record high of 177.3 bushels per acre. Soybean production totaled 4.16 billion bushels, a slight decrease from the previous year.
These figures reflect the ever-changing landscape of agriculture, influenced by a variety of factors including weather conditions, market demands, and agricultural practices.
