2024 CPM short course tackles crop disease

By Scout Nelson

The 2024 CPM Short Course and MCPR Trade Show will take place from December 10 to 12 at the Minneapolis Hilton Hotel. This year’s sessions will focus on crop disease issues experienced in 2024 and explore potential risks for future growing seasons. Producers will gain insights into managing diseases that have affected corn and soybean crops.

One of the event’s highlighted speakers is Dean Malvick, professor of plant pathology at the University of Minnesota. Malvick will lead a session titled “A Recap of Corn and Soybean Disease Problems in Minnesota for 2024 and Future Risks.”

This presentation, scheduled for December 12 at 8 a.m., will cover recurring diseases like southern corn rust, tar spot, northern corn leaf blight in corn, and sudden death syndrome, brown stem rot, Rhizoctonia root and stem rot, and phytophthora rot in soybeans.

“We want to alert folks of these problems, what’s associated with these risks, what the risks might be in the future and how we might want to consider managing them,” said Malvick. He emphasized that lessons learned from this year’s issues could improve disease preparedness in future seasons.

Another valuable session will be presented by Michael Wunsch, plant pathologist at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center.

Wunsch will discuss “Optimizing White Mold Management in Soybean and Dry Beans with Fungicides” on December 11 at 1:55 p.m. This session will offer a detailed review of white mold fungicide application research conducted over the last decade in eastern North Dakota.

Wunsch will cover crucial points to help producers make informed decisions, such as:

  • Timing fungicide applications during bloom when conditions favour white mold
  • Choosing optimal spray droplet size based on canopy traits, row spacing, and nozzle type
  • Setting appropriate intervals between fungicide applications
  • Assessing economic returns related to increased spray volume

These sessions aim to provide producers with practical strategies for effective disease management in their crops.
