2024 LQA&E training scheduled for youth livestock exhibitors

The Livestock Quality Assurance & Ethics (LQA&E) training is a pivotal event for 4-H youth interested in participating in the State Fair. Scheduled for June 4, 2024, this training will take place from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM at Johnson Hall, located at 400 Union St, St Peter, MN, 56082.

This training is specifically designed to enhance the educational experience of 4-H animal science projects by teaching youth how to provide excellent care for their animals and ensure a high level of food safety for consumers.

Attendance is mandatory for all State Fair exhibitors, who must provide the Extension office with proof of completed training by the date set for their county to be eligible for State Fair participation.

The training offers two modes: an in-person session that is valid for three fair seasons and an online session through the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training, which is valid for one fair season. The specific training level required varies by grade:

• Youth in grades 3-5 are exempt from quality assurance training.
• Youth in grades 6-8 should take Level 1 if certifying for the first time or Level 2 if they have been previously certified.
• Youth in grades 9-11 should certify at Level 2.
• Youth in grades 12-13 have four options: certify at Level 2, complete an animal science class at a two- or four-year accredited college (and provide proof to the Extension office), assist the county in teaching their 4-H LQA&E classes, or submit documentation of leadership contributions to a 4-H animal science project meeting or workshop.

The event is free for all youth from Blue Earth, Brown, Faribault, Le Sueur, Nicollet, and Sibley counties. Registration is required and is available in 4-H Online from March 4 through May 31.

This comprehensive training ensures that participating youth are well-prepared to handle livestock ethically and are educated on the importance of food safety, thereby maintaining the high standards expected at the State Fair.
