The 4-H animal identification deadline is quickly approaching, and all members planning to participate in animal science projects in 2025 must take action by May 15. This includes any youth planning to show animals such as beef, dairy, goats, dogs, horses, poultry, rabbits, sheep, swine, and others at fairs or exhibitions.
There are specific timelines to follow. Market beef and dairy steer identification was due by February 18, 2025. The final deadline for all other animals is May 15, 2025. By this date, animals must be identified and entered into the 4-H Online system. Alternatively, members can submit a completed identification worksheet to their local Extension office.
Each species has its own set of identification requirements. All animals must be either owned or officially leased by the participant and identified according to 4-H guidelines.
For those needing ear tags, they are available through the local Extension office. Members must call at least one business day in advance to request tags. Appointments can be made during weekday office hours, and contacts include Sandi Weiland or Kelsey Berger.
A tattoo kit for rabbits is also available for members whose animals are not yet tattooed. Additionally, taggers can be borrowed for tagging animals. Members are reminded to return all equipment by the agreed deadline and not to wait until the last minute.
To support families, a virtual informational meeting will be held on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. This meeting is mandatory for those showing animals and will be conducted via Zoom. The meeting link will be shared through the 4-H Online system.
Families are encouraged to consult available resources, including a tip sheet for entering data in 4-H Online and the Minnesota 4-H Animal ID page, which contains species-specific requirements.
For questions or assistance, members can reach out to their local Extension office by phone or email. Staying on top of deadlines and following proper procedures ensures a smooth path to participation in the upcoming 4-H season.
