MDA Offers Free Nitrate Water Testing at Farmfest 2025

MDA Offers Free Nitrate Water Testing at Farmfest 2025

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is offering free nitrate water testing during Farmfest 2025. Visitors attending the event from August 5 to August 7 at the Historic Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls, Minnesota, are encouraged to stop by the MDA booth #517S.

Nitrate-nitrogen, or nitrate, is a natural compound found in groundwater. Normal levels range from 0 to 3 milligrams per liter (mg/L). If levels rise above 3 mg/L, it is considered elevated, and levels over 10 mg/L are unsafe. The MDA invites visitors to bring a sample of their water for testing during the event.

“Follow these easy steps the day you’re attending Farmfest to participate in the free nitrate water testing clinic: Run your faucet for five to 10 minutes. Collect at least one cup of water in any sealable container such as a jar or Ziploc bag. Keep it chilled if possible. It is recommended you make the MDA booth your first stop at Farmfest. Testing takes less than five minutes, and the results are just for you. No personal information is collected.”

High nitrate levels in water may result from fertilized soil, septic systems, wastewater, feedlots, urban drainage, or landfills. The Minnesota Department of Health advises private well owners to test their water for nitrate every one to two years.

Besides the nitrate testing, the MDA booth will feature several programs such as Rural Finance Authority Loan programs, MDA grant programs, the Minnesota Ag Weather Station Network, the Minnesota Ag Water Quality Certification Program, and resources for rural mental health support.

The MDA’s presence at Farmfest 2025 aims to support the agricultural community with helpful information, easy water testing access, and various programs that benefit Minnesota farmers and rural families.
