The latest episode of Advancing Nitrogen Smart helps farmers better understand variable rate nitrogen (VRN) management. Hosted by Brad Carlson, Extension educator from Mankato, and Dan Kaiser, nutrient management specialist from St. Paul, the show focuses on how VRN can improve crop yields when used wisely.
The key idea behind VRN is matching nitrogen application with the specific needs of different areas within a field. This means not all parts of a field require the same nitrogen levels, and applying the right amount in the right place can make a big difference.
However, VRN isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Certain field conditions are better suited for VRN, while others are not. Fields with variable soil types, uneven drainage, or differing productivity levels may benefit from VRN. On the other hand, fields with uniform conditions may not see much advantage from variable rates.
Timing, source, and placement — the other three “R’s” of nutrient management — also influence VRN success. Correct timing ensures that nitrogen is available when the crop needs it most. Choosing the right nitrogen source affects how quickly plants can absorb it. Placement matters because nitrogen must reach the root zone effectively.
The podcast also tackles common questions like whether yield maps are reliable guides for VRN decisions and highlights the importance of following local fertilizer guidelines, such as those set in Minnesota.
Farmers can access more information through resources like Nitrogen Smart workshops and the Minnesota Crop News newsletter. The podcast encourages listeners to stay informed and make smart nutrient management decisions to protect their crops and the environment.
Supported by Minnesota’s farm families and their corn check-off, Advancing Nitrogen Smart remains dedicated to empowering farmers with knowledge.
