Youth in grades 7 and up are invited to participate in the 4-H Animal Science on Wheels: livestock tour, a hands-on learning experience focused on livestock science and careers. Scheduled for October 16–18, 2025, this three-day, two-night adventure will take place across southwestern Minnesota and southeastern South Dakota.
Participants will travel by motorcoach and stay overnight in a hotel under the supervision of adult chaperones. This unique experience offers youth the chance to dive deep into the livestock industry and its various career paths.
Tour highlights include potential visits to South Dakota State University (SDSU) to Brookings, active cattle and sheep operations, veterinary clinics, and meat processing facilities. These stops aim to give students real-world exposure to animal agriculture, animal health, and food production.
Specific location details will be shared with registered participants to ensure a secure and organized experience. Youth will gain a deeper understanding of the livestock landscape, interact with industry experts, and explore career options related to animal science.
The cost for the entire trip is $150 per participant. Registration opens in 4-H Online on July 1 and closes on September 10, 2025. Because space is limited, early registration is encouraged.
To register or for assistance, participants can refer to the 4-H Online event registration guide. Questions can be directed to Kirstin Koch, Extension educator, at kochx040@umn.edu.
This educational tour provides a valuable opportunity for youth to expand their knowledge, explore future careers, and engage with peers who share an interest in animal agriculture.
