Advancing agriculture at 46th Norman County ag day

By Scout Nelson

The University of Minnesota Extension is thrilled to announce the 46th Annual Norman County Ag Day, set to take place in Ada. This significant event, also hosting the 2024 small grains update meeting, is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Ada Event Center, located at 415 West Main Street.

Registration for this informative and engaging day begins at 8 a.m., with the event officially kicking off at 8:30 a.m. and wrapping up around 3:30 p.m. The event will also be live streamed on YourLiveEvent.com, ensuring accessibility to a wider audience. One of the highlights of this year's Ag Day is the absence of registration fees, with lunch being provided at noon.

The lineup of topics and speakers is especially notable this year, featuring:

  • 4-H and FFA youth presentations, showcasing the talents of Norman County's youth.
  • Insights into spring wheat variety performance by Jochum Wiersma, a specialist in small grains from the University of Minnesota.
  • A 2024 Minnesota Legislative Update provided by Bruce Kleven, a legislative strategist for Minnesota Wheat.
  • Discussion on new use opportunities for corn by Devin Hoffarth from Minnesota Corn.
  • Presentations on various crop challenges such as pests and diseases by Angie Peltier, a University of Minnesota Extension crops educator.
  • Wheat and soybean on-farm research results shared by Melissa Carlson from the Wheat Research and Promotion Council.
  • Water research insights from Lindsay Pease, a nutrient and water management specialist.
  • Weed management strategies discussed by Thomas Peters, a Sugarbeet agronomist.
  • Farm safety and wellbeing tips from Emily Krekelberg, a farm safety and health educator.

This day promises to be a comprehensive and educational experience for anyone involved in the agricultural sector, offering the latest in research, legislative updates, and practical farming knowledge.
