Ash Tree Pest Reaches More Counties

Ash Tree Pest Reaches More Counties

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has confirmed new infestations of the emerald ash borer (EAB) in several areas across the state. The invasive insect has now been detected in Carlton, Meeker, Murray, Ottertail, and Wadena counties, raising the total number of affected counties to 58.

EAB is a highly destructive beetle that kills ash trees by burrowing under their bark. The larvae feed on the tree’s inner tissue, disrupting the flow of water and nutrients. Affected trees often show signs like bark splitting, S-shaped tunnels, and woodpecker activity, which may indicate the presence of EAB.

To limit the spread of this pest, the MDA has enacted emergency quarantines. The quarantines apply to all Meeker, Murray, Ottertail, and Wadena counties, as well as most of Carlton County (excluding the Fond du Lac Reservation). These quarantines restrict the movement of ash materials and firewood out of the affected areas.

“The MDA issues quarantines for all areas known to have EAB to reduce the risk of further spreading the tree-killing insect.”

A virtual informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. Residents and tree care professionals are encouraged to attend. The session will include a presentation and a live Q&A with MDA experts. Registration is available on the MDA website.

Public comments on the proposed quarantines are being accepted until August 8, 2025. Final adoption of the quarantine is expected on August 11, 2025. Details and quarantine language are available on the MDA website.
