On December 20, 2024, Congress voted to extend the federal government's funding through March 14, 2025, and approved significant provisions for agricultural support. The decision includes a one-year extension of the current Farm Bill and introduces $31 billion in economic and disaster relief targeted at U.S. farmers.
This financial support is critical as many farmers reported earnings below production costs throughout 2024 due to adverse conditions.
Jim Kanten, President of the MCGA, expressed gratitude for the inclusion of this essential aid package in the bill, noting its importance for farmers planning for the 2025 crop year and securing operating loans. The relief measures are expected to help farmers recover from production losses caused by extreme weather events experienced during the year.
Throughout 2024, the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) actively lobbied for a new Farm Bill that would reinforce the farm safety net and protect crop insurance. The association's efforts included testimony before Congress, emphasizing the dire economic conditions facing farmers and the potential for a worsening situation without timely legislative action.
Despite efforts for a new five-year farm bill, priorities shifted towards securing immediate economic and disaster relief as year-end approached. Congressional leaders, recognized by MCGA for their roles in ensuring the inclusion of this aid, include U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman G.T. Thompson and incoming Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman.
While the resolution was a significant achievement, the MCGA expressed disappointment over the exclusion of a provision for year-round E15 in the final text, which had been anticipated to help stabilize fuel costs for agricultural producers. The organization remains committed to advocating for this regulatory change in the next congressional session.
The continuation of the Farm Bill and the additional financial aid are vital steps in supporting U.S. farmers during these challenging times. The MCGA and its members appreciate the ongoing efforts of Minnesota’s congressional delegation and look forward to further legislative developments that reinforce the agricultural sector's stability and growth.
