IDFA Responds to Potential U.S. Tariffs on Canadian Dairy

IDFA Responds to Potential U.S. Tariffs on Canadian Dairy

By Jamie Martin

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) has responded to discussions about potential U.S. tariffs on Canadian dairy products, emphasizing the need for a fair and stable trade environment between the two countries.

Becky Rasdall Vargas, IDFA’s senior vice president of trade and workforce policy, highlighted key concerns surrounding Canada’s restrictive trade policies and their impact on U.S. dairy exports.

According to IDFA, Canada imposes tariffs of up to 250% on certain U.S. dairy products, making it difficult for American producers to access the Canadian market. Additionally, restrictive quotas under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) prevent the U.S. from reaching export levels that would trigger tariff reductions.

“U.S. dairy is grateful for the Trump Administration’s efforts to hold Canada accountable on these protectionist measures,” said Vargas. “At the same time, a prolonged tariff war with our top trading partners will continue to create uncertainty and additional costs for American dairy farmers, processors, and our rural communities.”

IDFA stresses the importance of resolving trade disputes through negotiation rather than retaliatory tariffs. While tariffs may address short-term trade imbalances, they can also increase costs for dairy producers and disrupt supply chains.

The association urges both countries to engage in dialogue to ensure stable trade conditions that benefit farmers, processors, and consumers.

The IDFA represents a broad spectrum of dairy industry stakeholders, from small producers to multinational corporations. Its members contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, supporting over 3.2 million jobs and driving $794 billion in economic activity.

The ongoing trade debate highlights the complexities of dairy market regulations and the need for collaborative solutions. IDFA remains committed to working with policymakers to promote fair trade policies that support dairy farmers and strengthen the industry’s long-term stability.
