H5N1 Outbreak Expands in Dairy Herds

H5N1 Outbreak Expands in Dairy Herds

By Scout Nelson

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed six additional cases of H5N1 avian flu in dairy cattle, all from Idaho. This raises the national total to 1,031 detections across 17 states since March 2024.

Idaho continues to be the nation’s most affected area. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) reports 25 quarantined dairy facilities across Gooding, Jerome, and Twin Falls counties. Idaho's dairy sector is the state's largest agricultural industry, and it is the third-biggest dairy producer in the country. ISDA notes the state is home to about 350 family-owned dairy farms.

Efforts to control the outbreak include quarantines and heightened monitoring measures. Officials aim to prevent further spread by enhancing biosecurity practices and closely tracking animal health.

In addition to cattle cases, APHIS also confirmed two more avian flu detections in backyard poultry flocks. A North Dakota flock in Stutsman County with 50 birds and a Minnesota flock in Stearns County with 4 birds tested positive for the virus.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of biosecurity for both dairy operations and poultry owners. Quick reporting of sick animals and following recommended guidelines remain key steps in controlling the spread.

The growing number of H5N1 cases in livestock highlights the need for ongoing vigilance. National and local officials are working together to manage the situation and minimize risks to both animal and public health.

Officials encourage all livestock and poultry caretakers to monitor their animals closely and seek veterinary care if they notice any signs of illness.
