Apply Now for Dairy Planning Grants

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota dairy farmers now have a valuable opportunity to plan for the future of their operations with the help of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Dairy Business Planning Grants. These grants are designed to support farmers in creating strong and effective business plans with the help of independent, third-party experts.

Eligible projects include evaluating the feasibility of expanding a dairy farm, planning for environmental improvements, developing succession or transition plans, and updating feedlot permits. The grants also support other customized business planning needs to help strengthen dairy operations across the state.

"Dairy farming comes with real challenges, and thoughtful planning is essential. We’re proud to offer Dairy Business Planning Grants to support Minnesota farmers as they look ahead to strengthen their operations. Their hard work brings fresh, high-quality dairy products to tables here in Minnesota and beyond," said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen.

The program provides funding that covers 50 percent of business planning costs, with a maximum grant of $5,000. The remaining 50 percent must be covered by the producer. This cost-sharing approach helps ensure farmers have access to expert support while staying involved in the planning process.

Applications will be approved on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2025, or until the remaining $28,000 in funding is fully awarded.

Interested farmers can review full eligibility requirements and apply by visiting the Dairy Business Planning Grants web page. For more information or questions, farmers can contact Kami Schoenfeld at Kami.Schoenfeld@state.mn.us or call 651-201-6643.

This program is a valuable step in helping Minnesota’s dairy farmers secure a sustainable and successful future.
