The University of Minnesota Extension is hosting a free Forest Management for Wildlife Field Tour on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 1 to 4 p.m. Central Time at the Bass Brook Wildlife Management Area, located at 34385 US-2, Grand Rapids, Minnesota. This educational event is designed to help woodland owners and nature enthusiasts learn about creating and maintaining habitats for songbirds, deer, fishers, and other native wildlife species.
Participants will gain insights into the essential elements of wildlife habitats and explore how forest management practices can support biodiversity. The tour will introduce attendees to the Forestry for Minnesota Birds guidebook, which provides detailed strategies for balancing forest health with wildlife conservation.
Experts will discuss creative and sustainable methods for enhancing forest ecosystems to make them suitable for multiple species.
The field tour will take place outdoors, where participants will walk through parts of the Bass Brook Wildlife Management Area. Attendees are asked to meet at the Pokegama Dam Campground before the tour begins.
Trails are generally wide and level, though one section features a steeper slope, and there will be an inactive railroad crossing. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly and be prepared for winter weather conditions.
Registration is free but required to receive event updates. Those needing accommodations should contact Anna Stockstad at stock523@umn.edu or 218-726-6466 at least two weeks prior to the event. Interpreter services may be available with advance notice.
This hands-on tour offers a valuable opportunity to learn about forest biodiversity, habitat creation, and responsible woodland care while connecting with others who share an interest in wildlife and conservation.
