Minnesota boosts emerging farmers with new grants

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota's commitment to nurturing the next generation of farmers takes a step forward with the announcement of substantial grant funding from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). These grants are designated to empower organizations that offer business and technical assistance to farmers hailing from historically underserved communities.

The Emerging Farmer Technical Assistance Grant Program has allotted a total of $554,920 in one-time grants to eight deserving organizations. These funds are earmarked to provide targeted services and support, addressing specific needs such as cultural considerations, business coaching, and the partial payment of insurance premiums under a specialized USDA program.

Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey of the MDA acknowledges the importance of agriculture in Minnesota's economy and the challenges faced by new entrants in the sector. The grants are a testament to Minnesota's dedication to removing these obstacles and helping emerging farmers succeed.

Key Points on Grant Recipients and Support Activities:

  • AgCentric - Offers scholarships and outreach for state college programs, receiving $50,000.
  • Farm Commons - Provides legal support and workshops, awarded $47,896.
  • Forty Acre Cooperative - Focuses on business mentorship for BIPOC farmers with a $68,850 grant.
  • Friendly Hmong Farms - Receives $67,224 for marketing support and business coaching.
  • Kilimo Minnesota - Aids farmers of African descent through mentorship, with a $99,993 grant.
  • Land Stewardship Project - Offers bilingual business mentorship, receiving $53,189.
  • MN Farmers' Market Association - Supports insurance navigation, awarded $100,000.
  • Renewing the Countryside - Trains food hub managers, receiving $67,768.

These grants come in response to the recommendations from the MDA’s Emerging Farmers’ Working Group and are aimed at fostering an environment where diversity in farming is encouraged and supported. By facilitating access to critical resources, the MDA is ensuring that the future of Minnesota's farming includes a rich tapestry of individuals from all backgrounds.
