Minnesota boosts new farmer support

Minnesota boosts new farmer support

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Rural Finance Authority is currently accepting applications for the 2025 Beginning Farmer Tax Credit. This initiative aims to bolster the next generation of farmers by providing financial incentives to asset owners who lease or sell agricultural assets, including land, equipment, and livestock to beginners in farming.

This year, $4 million is allocated to the program, available on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure funding, both asset owners and aspiring farmers are advised to submit their applications promptly. Eligibility for the tax credit requires submission of detailed lease or sale agreements.

The tax benefits for asset owners are diverse, extending to various assets sold or leased to certified beginning farmers. Importantly, recent legislative adjustments now allow family members such as parents, grandparents, and siblings to also benefit from this tax incentive when they sell farmland directly to a relative, although this extension does not apply to leases or sales of other assets like machinery or livestock.

To qualify as a beginning farmer, individuals must be Minnesota residents either new to agriculture or within their first ten years of farming. They must demonstrate financial viability through positive earnings projections, possess a net worth below $1,013,000, and participate in an approved Farm Business Management program.

Additionally, beginning farmers can benefit from a non-refundable state tax credit covering up to $1,500 of their Farm Business Management program tuition annually for up to three years. This dual approach of supporting both asset owners and new farmers underscores Minnesota's commitment to nurturing a robust future for its agricultural sector, ensuring ongoing food security and the sustainability of rural communities.
