Minnesota Boosts Soil Health Funding

Minnesota Boosts Soil Health Funding

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has announced a major step toward improving soil health by awarding 166 grants worth nearly $4.7 million. These grants are part of the Soil Health Financial Assistance Program, which supports conservation practices and sustainable farming. The funds have reached farms and watersheds across 79 counties, with an average grant value of about $30,000.

The program provides cost sharing support, covering up to 50 percent of equipment costs. The grant range starts at $500 and goes up to $45,000. Eligible equipment includes no till drills, air seeders, strip tillage units, and other tools that promote soil-friendly farming practices. These technologies help reduce soil disturbance and improve water quality.

“Overwhelming interest in this program shows a clear demand for tools that help build healthier soils, protect water quality, and ensure long term productivity,” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. “This year’s response reflects continuing momentum among producers to expand their conservation practices.”

Since the program began in 2023, demand has remained very high. A total of 1,115 applications has been submitted so far. Out of these, 351 projects have been approved, receiving about $10.3 million in funding. However, the total requested amount has reached $33.1 million, showing that interest is much greater than the funding available.

The program has already supported soil conservation work on more than 526,000 acres of farmland. This effort helps improve soil structure, increase fertility, and protect natural resources like water.

The next application round will open in August and remain available throughout the month. Individuals, groups, and local governments are encouraged to apply. More details and application materials are available at the SHFAP webpage.
