Minnesota Ag in the Classroom (MAITC) is excited to launch the first-ever statewide School Garden Week, happening from May 19–23, 2025. This special week is dedicated to recognizing the valuable role school gardens play in classrooms and communities across the state.
School gardens are more than just places for plants—they are outdoor classrooms that help students learn about science, nature, nutrition, and teamwork. These gardens support hands-on education while also promoting healthy eating and environmental awareness. School Garden Week encourages schools to share their garden stories and celebrate the hard work of students, educators, and community volunteers who make these green spaces possible.
To officially mark the beginning of this celebration, a special event will take place on May 20, 2025, at Bruce Vento Elementary School in St. Paul. The event will include welcome remarks, the reading of an official proclamation, and a tour of the school’s garden. This ceremony will also feature the participation of Minnesota Department of Agriculture Deputy Commissioner Andrea Vaubel, along with other school and community leaders.
“School gardens are powerful tools for education and community building,” said Andrea Vaubel. “They help children connect with their food, understand nature, and take pride in their learning.”
The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and members of the media are welcome to attend. Those interested can RSVP to Nikki Warner at the MDA by calling 651-238-7909 or emailing nikki.warner@state.mn.us.
School Garden Week reminds us how gardens can inspire learning, develop healthy habits, and bring people together.
