Minnesota Crops Could Use More Rain


The USDA says some areas of Minnesota have become very dry and need rain. Seven percent of topsoil moisture was rated very short, with 34% short, 54% adequate, and 5% surplus. Six percent of subsoil moisture was very short, with 29% short, 61% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Corn emergence reached 94 percent complete, 6 days ahead of last year and 4 days ahead of the 5-year average. Seventy-five percent of Minnesota’s corn is in good to excellent condition.

Soybean planting was nearly complete at 99 percent. That’s 12 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of the 5-year average. Ninety-one percent of the soybeans have emerged and 75% of the soybeans are in good to excellent condition.

Seventy-five percent of the potato crop is in good to excellent condition.

Barley was 94% emerged with 43% of the crop jointed, with 65% in good to excellent condition.

Oats were 95% emerged with 61% jointed and 23% headed. Oat condition was 65 percent good to excellent.
