Minnesota expands job training for growing sectors

By Scout Nelson

In recognition of Workforce Development Month, Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan are focusing on initiatives aimed at connecting Minnesotans to high-demand jobs. Efforts include expanding workforce development programs and job training, targeting sectors like clean energy, healthcare, and manufacturing.

Governor Walz highlighted Minnesota’s status as a top state for business, emphasizing the importance of workforce development to build a competitive economy. The state’s Dual Training Grant program now includes the child care industry, providing $450,000 to train new workers. “We’ve expanded on-the-job training to grow our economy and build a strong, competitive workforce,” Walz said.

The Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and its partners are working to ensure all Minnesotans have access to job opportunities. Among the initiatives are the Clean Economy Equitable Workforce program and the Drive for Five Fund, both of which aim to prepare workers for high-demand sectors. Additionally, the Transformative Career Pathways program offers skills training, internships, and job placement.

Lt. Governor Flanagan stressed the importance of workforce investments. “These programs are charting pathways for people in Minnesota to succeed in high-growth industries,” she said.

The state's workforce strategy also includes removing college degree requirements for certain jobs, expanding teacher mentorship programs, and increasing child care grants to support working families.

On September 12, workforce development professionals will gather at the Minnesota Workforce Summit in Duluth to collaborate on strategies for the future.

This collective effort is key to building a dynamic workforce and ensuring Minnesota’s economic success for years to come.
