Minnesota farmers get help with certification costs

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota organic farmers and handlers certified through the USDA National Organic Program may qualify for a rebate of up to 75% of their certification expenses. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is offering the Organic Certification Cost-Share Program, which is open to operations certified or maintaining certification between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024. Farmers can receive reimbursement for up to 75% of their certification costs, with a maximum of $750 per category, including crop, livestock, processing/handling, and wild harvest.

The deadline for applications is October 31, 2024, and funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, provided by the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA).

Interested participants can access program details and application forms on the MDA website or apply through their local FSA office. For further assistance, applicants can contact Cassie Dahl at Cassie.Dahl@state.mn.us or call 651-201-6134.

Organic certification is an essential process that ensures consumers that the products they purchase comply with federal organic standards. It involves third-party verification through record reviews and annual on-site inspections of organic operations. The program supports farmers in maintaining their certification and adhering to National Organic Standards.
