Minnesota farmers speed ahead with fall harvest

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota farmers received limited rainfall in the week ending October 27, 2024, with an average of 6.5 days deemed suitable for fieldwork, as reported by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Harvest operations were nearing completion, with some areas beginning to plant fall small grains. Fall tillage and fertilizer application activities were also ongoing, while livestock were being brought in from pastures in preparation for winter.

Topsoil moisture levels in Minnesota were reported as 32% very short, 44% short, and 24% adequate, with no surplus. Subsoil moisture followed a similar trend, with 23% rated as very short, 40% short, 36% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn harvesting for grain had reached 85%, positioning farmers 9 days ahead of last year’s schedule and 12 days ahead of the five-year average. The moisture content of the corn being harvested was approximately 16%. Other crops were also progressing well; the sugarbeet harvest was nearly finished at 98%, while the sunflower harvest reached 65%.

With favorable weather conditions, Minnesota farmers have been able to make substantial progress in harvests and fall fieldwork, setting a strong foundation for next year’s planting season and overall farm productivity.
