The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is stepping up to encourage retail service stations to embrace motor fuel blends with a higher ethanol content. Through the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Biofuels Infrastructure Grant Program, as much as $3.335 million is up for grabs. This funding is tailored to assist stations in either upgrading or replacing their current infrastructure, making them E25 compatible or better.
Retail petroleum dispensers like fuel storage tanks and other related equipment fall under the eligible categories. MDA's Commissioner, Thom Petersen, highlights the growing demand from consumers for cleaner fuel choices. He acknowledges the important role of biofuels in achieving the state's environmental objectives, while simultaneously backing farmers and bolstering rural economies.
Stations keen on applying can request an amount between $5,000 and $199,000 for each project. There's a catch, they must allocate at least 35% of the entire project cost as a cash match. The granted funds can be used over a three-year stretch, with the initiation slated post mid-January 2024.
Eligibility is extended to retail petroleum dispensers operating in Minnesota, as long as they don't exceed 10 sites globally. It's noteworthy that every site in Minnesota vying for the funds needs to have its separate application.
The MDA, aiming to promote inclusivity, will give added weight to applications from women, BIPOC community members, veterans, or projects catering to underserved communities, be it socio-economic, color, or limited biofuel access areas.
The funding pool has its roots in a legislative allocation for the AGRI Program, complemented by contributions from Minnesota Corn. The AGRI program plays a pivotal role in fostering both the agricultural and renewable energy spheres of Minnesota.
Applications due by October 12, 2023, visit AGRI Biofuels Infrastructure Grant webpage for eligibility criteria and application process.
