Minnesota launches grants to combat bird flu

By Scout Nelson

In a move to safeguard Minnesota's livestock from avian influenza, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has launched a grant program under its Agricultural Growth and Research Initiative. The Protect Grant program aims to assist farmers in implementing virus prevention measures by covering up to 80% of the cost, capped at $10,000 per applicant.

This financial aid targets a variety of virus prevention tools including air filtration systems, electronic animal identification systems, and isolation pens, among others. Each eligible farm is required to contribute a 20% cash match, which can be offset by up to $2,000 for documented time and labor costs.

MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen underscored the importance of these grants, stating, “As Minnesota’s livestock operations continue to be on the frontlines of the ongoing avian influenza outbreak, it’s essential that producers take every opportunity available to protect their animals and prevent the further spread of this disease. I thank the state Legislature for this funding, which will be helpful in mitigating the virus’ future impact on Minnesota agriculture.”

Priority in grant allocation will be given to beginning farmers, defined as those with 10 years or fewer in farming, reflecting Minnesota's commitment to supporting the next generation of farmers.

Eligible livestock for the grant includes a wide range of animals from poultry and cattle to less common farm animals like llamas and emus.

Farmers interested in this opportunity must submit their applications by the end of October 2024, with grant contracts anticipated to be signed by February 2025. For complete details and application procedures, producers are encouraged to visit the MDA website.
