This year, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is set to transform the Minnesota State Fair into a vibrant showcase of agricultural activities, aimed at connecting fairgoers of all ages to the farming world. The fair will run from August 22 to September 2 at the Agriculture/Horticulture Building, located at the fairgrounds' northeast corner.
Daily from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom program offers a special activity for kids. Children will have the opportunity to create a seed bomb matrix at the booth, which they can take home and plant, observing the growth process in their own garden.
Additionally, the MDA’s Emerging Farmers Office will provide valuable resources aimed at supporting beginning and emerging farmers in underrepresented communities. This includes access to information on land acquisition, available grants, and resources to improve language accessibility for non-native English speakers.
Farmer-members from the Minnesota Grown local foods promotion program will also be available to discuss their practices and operations. They will distribute the Minnesota Grown Directory, temporary tattoos, and Swedish dishcloths to visitors, further enriching the agricultural learning experience.
Moreover, fairgoers can engage with a themed prize wheel to learn about Minnesota’s invasive species, from the spongy moth to the emerald ash borer, gaining insights into managing noxious weeds and protecting the environment from these pests.
The MDA exhibit promises to be a highlight of the fair, providing an educational and engaging experience that links agriculture closely to daily life through interactive and fun activities.
