Minnesota Leads in Ag Tech Innovation

Minnesota Leads in Ag Tech Innovation

By Scout Nelson

The agriculture industry is facing growing challenges, from changing markets and extreme weather to disease threats in crops and livestock. At the same time, the need for safe and plentiful food remains essential. Brian Buhr, Dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota, shares how the university is responding to these pressures with cutting-edge agricultural research and support.

When asked about the biggest challenges in agriculture today, Dean Buhr says, “Volatility continues to be a major challenge.” He mentions market changes, weather shifts, and disease outbreaks like avian influenza, which is now affecting more than poultry. The university addresses these issues through practical research, technology, and partnerships.

Technology, including artificial intelligence and big data, plays a growing role. “Big data is becoming an important tool for farmers,” says Buhr. It helps with decisions about crop inputs and climate management and allows researchers to study crops on molecular and global levels.

Minnesota’s natural resources are also key to agricultural success. “Our work in agriculture is built on our natural resources,” Buhr explains. Forests, soil, water, and wildlife are essential not just for the environment but for the future of farming.

Investing in research creates major economic returns. “Every dollar invested in public agricultural research and development returns up to $40 to Minnesota’s economy,” Buhr says. Research also helps create new crops like pennycress, which improves soil and water while boosting income.

The University of Minnesota focuses on research from start to finish — from genetics to usable farm practices. Buhr adds, “We need to make that investment, make those contributions to ensure we can feed people on fewer resources to provide healthier lives.”

This research ensures the next generation can meet the growing demands of agriculture and the environment through science and smart solutions.
