Minnesota leads with hemp feed approval

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota has taken a significant step by permitting hemp seed meal for use in animal feed, specifically for laying hens. This development follows the Association of American Feed Control Officers' (AAFCO) recent tentative approval of hemp seed meal as an ingredient.

The state's progressive stance on tentative ingredients enables this new addition, fostering innovation in the agricultural sector.

Hemp seed meal, derived from the remnants of Cannabis sativa L. seeds post-oil extraction, is recognized for its protein and fat content. Daniel King, an MDA feed specialist and AAFCO board member, highlighted the potential for hemp to diversify specialty ingredient markets. Currently, it can constitute up to 20% of a laying hen’s diet.

Regulatory oversight remains strict. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set the acceptable levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) in hemp seed meal at 2 ppm and 20 ppm respectively. Over the next year, further research will verify that these thresholds are maintained, ensuring the feed's safety and compliance.

The process for official AAFCO approval could extend beyond a year, but there is optimism that successful integration into laying hen diets could lead to broader applications in other animal feeds. Full approval would cement hemp seed meal's role in feed formulations, potentially benefiting a wider range of livestock.

In addition to regulatory advancements, Minnesota continues to support hemp cultivation under the guidelines established by the 2018 Federal Farm Bill. The state currently hosts 230 licensed hemp growers and 158 processors. Those interested in joining the 2025 growing season have until April 30, 2025, to apply for a license.

This initiative not only supports local agriculture but also aligns with sustainable practices by utilizing every part of the hemp plant. As Minnesota leads with these regulatory and market developments, it sets a precedent for other states considering similar expansions in hemp utilization.
